Advising Resources

Advising Guidelines – Urban Education Option

The Urban Education Option of the Elementary and Early Childhood Education Program is a 5 year sequence that culminates in a Master’s Degree and certifications in either P-6 [ECE][1] or K-6 [ELE] and English as a Second Language [ESL].

Elementary or Early Childhood Education majors may begin this course of study during Freshman year or transfer any time before the complete their junior practicum. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is needed to transition from Year 4 to Year 5, therefore we require a consistently high GPA to be admitted to and to remain in the program.

Course of study:  At the end of Year 4 students are awarded a Bachelor’s degree and therefore must complete the standard 32 units. In addition, students in the 5 year program are expected to also complete 2 graduate level courses within the first four years. This may require students to take 1-2 semesters with a  5 unit load.[2] Another option is to take 1-2 courses during the Winter interim, May, or Summer semesters.

Majors: The Urban Education option may accept students from all disciplines however content area disciplines (Mathematics, English, History, Biology) are encouraged as well as areas of study such as Spanish that are currently considered “high need”.

Study abroad: There are several opportunities to study abroad as part of the Urban Education option.

  • During your undergraduate career you can study abroad for an academic semester as long as you plan for a semester with no education coursework. This is very easy to do with just a bit of advanced planning.
  • During your undergraduate career you can take particular courses abroad. These are more short-term experiences and there are opportunities all over the globe. During the summer between year 4 and year 5 you can take up to three English as a Second Language courses in Mallorca, Spain.
  • You can do 7 weeks of student teaching in another country as part of our Global Student Teaching Program.

Notes:

  1. Most UGs will have to take at least one 5 unit semester.
  2. Sequence of some courses is flexible (i.e. US History, ECE 102)
  3. Early Childhood Majors also need ECE 202

[1] Although the ECE certification is P-6 we focus specifically on P-3

[2] GPA of 3.3 is required for approval of a 5 unit semester load.

[3] Only required for ECE concentration

[4] Not required for Math, Psychology or Sociology majors or students who have previously taken Statistics

[5] Not required for Math majors

[6] Recommended courses are Race Relations in the US, Women in the US or courses lead by Fisher, McGreevy, or Nicolosi

[7] Although ECE 102 is listed as a VPA that is not sufficient for Education majors. You must choose an alternate VPA.

[8] Check your FSP to see if it meets other liberal learning requirements (i.e. VPA, gender, global)

[9] This planner is general and does not include specific second major requirements.
